 Note: You cannot install plugin on WordPress.com. You can only do that when you upgrade to their business plan. WordPress.com has its limitations so we are not covering that because you cannot install plugin unless you upgrade.

  We will be looking at three different ways to install a WordPress plugin. You can do two from your WordPress dashboard while the remaining one can be done from your Cpanel.

 In this method, you install it directly to your website without downloading.

  1. Log in to your WordPress.org dashboard.
  2. Go to Plugin menu. {see attached photo}

  3. Click on Add New.
  4. You will be taken to the plugin store. Enter the name of the plugin you want on the search bar and search.

  1. Once the plugin appears, click on install. The latest WordPress will download and install it in the background without closing the page.

 

  1. Once the installation is complete. Click on activate and it will activate immediately.

 

  1. You are done.

The first method is gone.

Lets look at how to upload a WordPress plugin. This method is applicable when you have downloaded the plugin or you bought the plugin and you want to install it.  Lets get started.

  1. Login to your WordPress.org dashboard.
  2. Click on Plugin >>Add New.

  1. Once you click on add new, it will take you to another page, Locate Upload Plugin at top.

 

  1. Click on Upload Plugin.

  1. Choose file and click on Install Now.

 

  1. It will install, once its done. Install the plugin.

 The last but not the least is how to install a WordPress plugin manually using FTP client. So many web hosting providers installs an online FTP client. With this online FTP client, you can upload file easily. The alternative FTP software for Pc is Filezilla. Its free and easy to use.

  This method is most suitable when the size of the plugin you want to install is bigger than normal size you can upload from the WordPress dashbpoard.

  The reason while I made this to come last is because this is the least friendly for beginners. You may not know where to start. To be able to do this, you need to be an advanced WordPress user.

 How to install a WordPress plugin manually using FTP client.

  1. Login to you C panel. If you don’t know your username and password, contact your web hosting provider.

 

  1. Open your file manger.

  1. Open Public_html on your file manager.

 

  1. Open /wp-content/plugins/

 

  1. Click on upload. Its located at the top.

 

  1. Upload the file.

 

  1. Once the upload is complete. You need to visit the admin dashboard. Click on Plugins >> Installed plugins and activate it.

 

  1. You are done.

 

Note: Upon activation, you may need to configure the plugin to work well.
